About Susan G. Komen for the Cure

The Susan G. Komen for the Cure Promise is to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cures.
As one of a network of more than 120 affiliates around the country, the Komen Richmond Affiliate contributes to the Komen Promise by awarding funds to not-for-profit organizations that provide innovative, non-duplicative breast health and breast cancer services directly to the medically underserved, uninsured, or underinsured.

Grantee Spotlight

The VCU Massey Cancer Center project, “Providing Prostheses and Surgical Bras to Uninsured Patients,” improves the self-image of uninsured women who have undergone mastectomy by providing them with a high-quality, professionally fitted breast prosthesis and two surgical bras. Funding for patient transportation to fitting appointments is also available. Komen Richmond is pleased to support this project as it fulfills our promise to ensure quality care for all by providing post-mastectomy products to women without insurance coverage.

Funding for Local & National Programs

Up to 75% of the net revenue raised from our Race for the CureŽ, special events, and the generosity of individual and corporate donors are distributed right back into the community of Central Virginia. The remaining 25% directly supports Komen’s National Research Grant Program.

Since 1998, the Komen Richmond Affiliate has raised over $3.3 million for both local programs and Komen’s National Research Grant Program. We are currently funding 15 innovative projects totaling $556,910. Additionally, in 2008 we contributed $212,883 to fund breast cancer research through Komen’s National Research Grant Program.

The Komen Richmond Affiliate is organized by hundreds of volunteers. This enables the Affiliate to keep its administrative costs as low as possible and allows the organization to fund many worthy programs that provide assistance to women who have traditionally been medically underserved. Our net proceeds will target local grant programs that:

  • Pay for mammograms for women who cannot afford them.
  • Educate women, particularly those who are medically underserved, about the importance of breast self-examination, professional screening, and mammograms.
  • Focus on treatment support as well as providing easier access to existing treatment resources for women with breast cancer.
